Retail industry shippers have been faced with tough on-time mandates from their customers for some time now. Consider the Walmart-inspired Must Arrive by Dates (MABD) that have been adopted by numerous other non-Benton-based businesses. Following in this tradition, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that increasing numbers of grocers are now levying fines on suppliers whose shipments arrive late costing the grocery industry a reported $75 billion a year!

And with every delivery comes a box, or two, or three, all of which arrive on our doorsteps out of a diverse and complicated paper and packaging supply chain. Many online businesses are working to innovate their packaging solutions to reduce paper waste this time of year, but supply chain data has a big role to play in creating more responsible holidays going forward.

There is a lot of evidence that S&OP is hard to implement and get right. And when S&OP is implemented it often stalls, doesn’t make enough progress and doesn’t deliver enough value. The reasons are plenty, but one of the core reasons is the lack of senior leadership support. Another reason is that employees just get tired of an overly dogmatic, bureaucratic process and data focused monthly cycle.

Fueled by high consumer confidence and a robust job market, U.S. retail sales in the holiday period rose at their best pace since 2011, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks both online and in-store spending. Sales, excluding automobiles, rose 4.9 percent from Nov. 1 through Christmas Eve, compared with a 3.7-percent gain in the same period last year, according to the Mastercard Inc. unit, which tracks all forms of payment.
